5/28/08 Update from Gina at New Life Animal Sanctuary:

New Life Animal Sanctuary picked up over 250 animals from Cal State University's closing Psych Lab yesterday! 20 rats, 4 guinea pigs, almost 60 hamsters and about 150 mice (4 litters of babies that we were unable to count) waited patiently as our crew packed the animals into carriers and made sure no one was left behind (including 3 newborn mice who had been fed to geckos but were still alive). How amazing it was to see these beautiful critters see daylight for the first time and, once back at our holding location, to see them run on wheels for the first time (some ran for HOURS on end!), get fresh produce and treats for the first time, have boxes and places to hide, burrow and build dens for the first time!

Truly a heartwarming sight! And we want to share it with everyone who has helped make it possible: those who have donated cages and supplies, volunteered, donated funds, those who have inquired about and plan to adopt animals..... You're all invited to a Victory party at the location where the animals are temporarily housed in Redondo Beach on Saturday. Details to follow but mark your calenders!

If you have an adoption application pending or have otherwise sent an e-mail and haven't heard back from us, we sincerely apologize. Pulling this together was A LOT of work and there's only a few of us spending all hours to get ready for our new clients. Please bare with us - we will get back to everyone and follow up on all the adoption applications. Those who have already been cleared for adoption (and those who, hopefully will be cleared in the next few days or are interested in adopting) are welcome to pick your new friends up from the party on Saturday so bring a carrier. Otherwise, we'll have to make arrangements for pick-up/drop-off shortly thereafter.

These very lucky 250 have been given a NEW LIFE, where they will have all the comforts a critter could want and never be subjected to experimentation again! We especially want to thank the following individuals and organizations for their invaluable contributions to this project's success: Jane & Mark Garrison, Shannon Keith, Pia Salk, Sue Paul, Debra Mendelsohn and Bay Area Rats (bayarearats@aol.com), Diane Nesom, United Pet Food, The Bunny Bunch (bunnybunch.org), Suzanne Blanding, Donna Hardy and Judi Friedman.

Also, FYI, we are expecting to receive a group of rats from a lab in Pennsylvania. There are 70 total and the local group there is trying to find homes for as many as possible but we have agreed to take whatever they can't place. And there are 2 groups of dogs that we are working towards finding information and helping to find homes for so will keep you posted on that as well.

A few pictures of yesterday's rescue are attached below and there will be many more to follow. Please check newlifeanimalsanctuary.org/blog1 for further updates and photos and newlifeanimalsanctuary.org/adoption.html to fill out the adoption application.

5/20/08 Update from Gina at New Life Animal Sanctuary:

We expect to receive over 200 small animals from Cal State University Northridge's closing psych lab this week but we still need your help!

We've been working hard, collecting cages and supplies, etc. and are still a little short of what we need to accommodate all the animals.  The lab could call any day for us to come pick them up and we need to be ready!

What we Still Need:

* water bottles

* food bowls (small, ceramic)

* large cages or aquariums for colonies of mice, dwarf hamsters

* litter, bedding (carefresh or other non-toxic please)

* small animal carriers

* mouse & rat food

* small cardboard boxes (kleenex, cereal, etc.), toilet paper and paper towel rolls

If you can donate any of the above items, please e-mail the contact closest to you:

South Bay - Jane@JaneGarrison.com

Orange County/Inland Empire - gina@newlifeanimalsanctuary.org

San Fernando Valley - billy@zerobpm.com

We also still need permanent homes for rats, mice, syrian hamsters and dwarf hamsters.  Adoption application can be found on-line at: newlifeanimalsanctuary.org/adoption.html or e-mail adopt@newlifeanimalsanctuary.org

Right on the heals of this rescue, we have a batch of rats coming from a lab in Pennsylvania!  There are over 70 total being released and the local group there (The Humane League of Philadelphia) will secure homes for as many as they can and send the rest our way.

Obviously, all of this takes money and we are brand new, not quite ready to take this on, so financial contributions are most helpful in ensuring the best life for these lucky critters who are being given a New Life!  If you prefer, consider sending a gift card from Centinela Feed (http://www.centinelafeed.net/StoreLocations.htm) that we can use to buy supplies.
